FAQ

How old should a rider be to begin therapeutic riding?
Wings and Hooves prefers riders to be at least 6 years of age.

Are there other criteria for riders?
Riders must weigh no more than 175 lbs.  Also, if a rider has one or more of the contraindications listed in the riding application, therapeutic riding is not recommended and the instructor may not approve the rider’s enrollment, so please call first if you have any questions concerning any contraindication.

How do I obtain an application?
Applications are available under the Horsemanship Program / Horse Buddies Link above or legal guardians may call the Wings and Hooves office (603) 642-3722 and speak with a lesson instructor or director to obtain an application.

What is the process for students wishing to apply to Wings and Hooves?
If the student meets criteria for program participation, please call the office for an application.  The student’s primary care physician will need to complete a Medical History and sign a Consent for Release of Confidential Information.  If the student sees either an Occupation or Physical therapist or both, then he/she/they must also complete and sign the aforementioned forms.  As it takes some time to get everything done, we recommend that you pursue this right away.  All forms must be completed and returned before any student can schedule an interview for enrollment.

Once the application is complete, please call the Wings and Hooves office (603) 642-3722 to schedule an appointment for an interview. During the interview, an instructor will evaluate the potential student to determine eligibility for the program.  Potential students DO NOT ride a horse during the initial evaluation.

Finally, upon completion of the interview and fulfillment of eligibility requirements, the student and instructor will determine an available time for a weekly lesson and draft a set of goals for the lesson session.  An enrollment fee is requested for each session in which the student participates.  This fee covers enrollment for a 5 week session, as well as application and evaluation processing fees.  We operate upon the generosity of donors and always welcome contributions of any size.

When do lesson happen?
Lessons are held Monday – Saturday at a mutually convenient time for our lesson instructors and the riders.  While we try to accommodate everyone’s schedule, we do have a wait list for certain times throughout the week.
